Attention! These common phenomena are very easy to cause diesel generator set failure

June 30, 2022
In recent years, with the rising electricity consumption, diesel generator sets are more and more widely used in various industries, and at the same time, with the progress of manufacturing technology and computer control technology, the diesel generator sets have realized the functions of self-starting, self-detection, self-diagnosis, self-transferring load, remote monitoring and so on. But even so, the user still can not ignore the regular maintenance and inspection of the unit, in order to properly maintain the diesel generator set, it is necessary for the user to understand some of the following phenomena that may cause unit failure, in order to timely repair and reduce the failure rate of the unit.

1, the unit overheating

Overheating is one of the most common diagnoses of diesel generator maintenance, in general overload, overspeed, insulation breakdown of the winding and insufficient bearing lubrication may cause the unit overheating, diesel generator operating temperature has a clear allowable range, beyond or below this allowable temperature range, the diesel generator may be damaged, and even cause accidents. When the diesel generator starts to overheat, the alternator will also overheat, which will greatly reduce the insulation performance of the windings. If ignored, overheating will further damage other parts of the diesel generator, resulting in the unit may need to repair or replace parts.

2, fault current

Fault currents are any unintentionally high currents in the electrical system. These faults may cause a variety of problems to your generator. They are usually caused by a low impedance short circuit. If the fault is a short circuit in the generator winding, be sure to check or repair the generator immediately, because the winding may heat up and be damaged.

3, motor drive

Generator electric operation occurs when the engine is unable to provide sufficient power to the generator to meet its load demand. Here, the generator system is forced to compensate for the loss by providing active power to the engine, essentially making the generator work like an electric motor. Motor drive does not immediately damage the generator. However, if it is ignored, it may cause the engine to overheat. Therefore, it is necessary to protect the engine, which can be provided by a limit switch or exhaust hood temperature detector.

4, the generator loss of magnetism

Residual magnetism is the amount of magnetization left after the external magnetic field is removed from the circuit. It is usually found in generators and engines. Losing this residual magnetism in the generator may cause some problems to the system.

Loss of remanence occurs when a generator is not used for a long period of time due to aging or misconnected excitation windings. When this remanent magnetism disappears, the generator will not produce any power when starting.

5, generator undervoltage

When the diesel generator set is not used for a long time, or when the voltage induction fuse is blown and the excitation circuit is damaged, it will occur when the generator undervoltage, if the voltage can not rise after the generator starts, then the machine may face some serious problems.

Knowing the most common causes of diesel generator failure and proper maintenance is the key to keep your diesel generator running properly. When you find your generator has several phenomena mentioned above, please fix it immediately to avoid irreversible damage to the generator.
