Diesel generator use problems in low temperature environment

April 20, 2022
In order to start the diesel engine quickly, some workers in the low temperature environment often use the abnormal start method of waterless start (start first, then add cooling water). This practice can cause serious damage to the machine and should be prohibited.
Diesel generators are used differently in different environments, especially in low temperature environments, and more attention should be paid to the correct use and maintenance of the generator set.
1. Use any fuel you like.

The low temperature in winter makes the fluidity of diesel oil worse, the viscosity increases, and it is not easy to spray, resulting in poor atomization and deterioration of combustion, resulting in a decline in the power and economic performance of diesel engines. Therefore, when choosing oil at low temperature, you should try to choose light diesel oil with thinner viscosity, low freezing point and good ignition performance. It is generally required that the freezing point of diesel oil should be 7-10 ℃ lower than the local current seasonal temperature.

2. Start with an open flame to support combustion.

The air filter cannot be removed, use cotton yarn dipped in diesel oil to ignite and then make a kindling material and place it in the intake pipe to start the combustion. In this way, during the starting process, the dust-laden air from the outside will be directly sucked into the cylinder without being filtered, causing abnormal wear of the pistons, cylinders and other parts, and will also cause the diesel engine to work rough and damage the machine. Therefore, in low temperature conditions, it is necessary to replace the air filter frequently.

3. The water is released too early or the cooling water is not released.

Run at idling speed before turning off the flame, wait until the cooling water temperature drops below 60°C and the water is not hot, then turn off the flame and drain the water. If the cooling water is released prematurely, the body will suddenly shrink and cracks will appear when the body is suddenly attacked by cold air when the temperature is high. When the temperature is lower than -4°C, the cooling water in the cooling water tank of the diesel engine must be discharged, because the freezing volume of the water will increase at -4°C, and the radiator of the cooling water tank will be damaged due to the expansion of the volume.

4. Low temperature load operation.

After the diesel engine started to catch fire, some workers couldn't wait to put the load to work immediately. In a diesel engine that has been on fire soon, due to the low temperature of the body and the high viscosity of the oil, the oil is not easy to fill the friction surface of the moving pair, which will cause serious wear and tear of the machine. In addition, plunger springs, valve springs and injector springs are also prone to breakage due to "cold brittleness". Therefore, when the temperature is low, after the diesel engine starts to catch fire, it should be idling at low and medium speed for a few minutes, and then put into load operation when the cooling water temperature reaches 60 °C.

Fifth, do not pay attention to the body heat preservation.

When the temperature is low, it is easy to cause excessive cooling of the diesel generator when it is working. Therefore, heat preservation is the key to good use of diesel engines in low temperature environments, so all diesel engines in use should be equipped with cold protection equipment such as heat preservation jackets and heat preservation curtains.

Pay attention to the above points, you can effectively improve the service life of diesel generators and prolong the service time.

6. Improper startup method.

In order to start the diesel engine quickly, some workers in the low temperature environment often use the abnormal start method of waterless start (start first, then add cooling water). This practice can cause serious damage to the machine and should be prohibited. The correct preheating method is: first cover the thermal insulation quilt on the water tank, open the water valve, and continuously inject clean soft water of 60-70 °C into the water tank. Pour clean soft water at 90-100°C into the water tank, and shake the crankshaft so that all moving parts are properly pre-lubricated, and then start again. Or add water jacket heater and oil heater.
