Intake and exhaust system factors of insufficient power of diesel generator sets

June 01, 2022
Insufficient power failure is one of the typical failures of diesel generator sets. There are many factors affecting the power of diesel generator sets, such as intake and exhaust systems, fuel systems and mechanical systems, which may lead to insufficient power of diesel generator sets. In this article, Tingbo Power will analyze the reasons for the insufficient power of diesel generator sets from the intake and exhaust systems.
Diesel Generator Set Maintenance

Insufficient power failure is one of the typical failures of diesel generator sets. There are many factors affecting the power of diesel generator sets, such as intake and exhaust systems, fuel systems and mechanical systems, which may lead to insufficient power of diesel generator sets. In this article, Tingbo Power will analyze the reasons for the insufficient power of diesel generator sets from the intake and exhaust systems.

       1. Intake system failure
       1) The air filter is clogged
The blockage of the air filter of the diesel generator set causes the air intake resistance to increase, and the amount of air entering the cylinder decreases, resulting in insufficient combustion of diesel oil, resulting in a decrease in the power of the diesel generator set.
Tingbo Power Tips: No matter whether the air filter is wet or dry, the air filter element should be cleaned frequently. When the air filter is used for 150~200 hours, it needs to be maintained, and the filter element should be replaced when necessary to ensure the air filtration. device cleaning.

       2) Supercharger failure
The technical condition of the supercharger is directly related to the charging efficiency. Usually, the technical condition of the supercharger can be determined by checking the axial clearance and radial clearance of the supercharger. If the axial clearance and radial clearance of the supercharger are too large, the dynamic balance of the supercharger will be destroyed, and the speed of the supercharger will be reduced. A mechanically stuck supercharger wastegate valve will also reduce supercharger power.
Dingbo Power Tips: Diesel generator set supercharger is a precision machine that adjusts the operation. It cannot be disassembled at will. If it fails, it should be sent to the maintenance center for repair in time, or call the generator manufacturer for door-to-door maintenance.

       3) Air leakage in the intake line and air leakage in the intercooler
Air leakage from the intake pipe after the supercharger will cause the supercharger to fail and the charging efficiency to drop. The electronically controlled diesel generator is assembled with an intake pressure sensor, so the intake pressure can be monitored through the data stream. Air leakage from the intercooler will lead to insufficient intake air when the diesel generator set is burned, resulting in insufficient combustion and insufficient power of the diesel generator set.

       2. Exhaust pipe or muffler blocked
The blockage of the exhaust pipe or muffler of the diesel generator set will cause the exhaust to be blocked, the exhaust resistance will increase, the charging efficiency will decrease, and the power of the diesel generator will decrease.
Tip: Exhaust back pressure detection is an effective means of confirming exhaust blockage. When the measured back pressure value is higher than the standard, check whether the exhaust pipe and muffler (or post-processor) are unobstructed.

On diesel generators equipped with exhaust brakes, the exhaust back pressure will also increase when the butterfly valve is stuck in the closed position or cannot be opened effectively.

The above are the reasons for the intake and exhaust systems of the diesel generator set when the power is insufficient. When the diesel generator set fails, the user should be able to understand the cause of the failure in time, so as to take scientific measures for maintenance, so as to resume the work of the diesel generator set as soon as possible performance, so as not to delay electricity use.
