Introduction to all components and uses of diesel generator sets

June 09, 2022
I believe everyone knows that diesel generator sets are mainly composed of diesel engine, AC synchronous generator and control panel. Introduce the correct names and uses of all components of diesel generator sets. All components of diesel generator sets include the following 22.

1. Cylinder block
The cylinder block is the skeleton of a diesel generator set, and all other parts of the diesel engine are mounted on the cylinder block with screws or other connections. The cylinder block has many threaded holes for bolting to other components. There are also holes or supports for supporting the crankshaft in the cylinder body; drilling holes for supporting the camshaft; cylinder holes for installing cylinder liners.

2. Crankshaft and main bearing
The crankshaft is a long shaft installed in the lower part of the cylinder block, and the shaft is equipped with an offset connecting rod journal, that is, the crankpin of the crankshaft, which is used to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston connecting rod into a rotary motion. Oil supply passages are drilled inside the crankshaft to supply lubricating oil to the main and connecting rod bearings.
The main bearing that supports the crankshaft in the cylinder body is a sliding bearing.

3. Cylinder liner
Most diesel engines use replaceable cylinder liners, which are easy to replace when they wear out, and there is no need to reborre the cylinder bore or replace the cylinder block. Cylinder liners are generally one of the following two forms:
1) Dry cylinder liner. A dry liner, also known as a replaceable liner, is a liner that fits into the cylinder bore of the cylinder block without O-rings or other seals on it.
2) Wet cylinder liner. This is a cylinder liner that fits into the cylinder block and is in contact with cooling water. The top and bottom of the liner must be sealed to allow water to circulate around it. The top is sealed by the cylinder sleeve in the shoulder hole bored in the cylinder block. The bottom of the cylinder liner is equipped with an oil- and water-resistant polyfluorobutadiene rubber O-ring, which prevents cooling water from penetrating into the crankcase or oil pan.

4. Pistons, piston rings and connecting rods
The piston is the support of the piston ring. The piston is composed of the piston top, the upper part of the piston (also called the leak-proof part), and the piston skirt. It is assembled in the engine cylinder or cylinder liner and can move up and down alternately in the cylinder bore. The function of the piston and the piston rings installed in its ring groove is to transmit the pressure of fuel and air combustion to the connecting rod connected to the crankshaft. The role of the connecting rod is to connect the piston to the crankshaft. Connecting the piston to the connecting rod is the piston pin, which is usually fully floating (meaning that the piston pin floats on both the piston and connecting rod).

5. Camshaft and timing gear
In diesel generator sets, the camshaft controls the intake valve and exhaust valve; in some diesel generator sets, it can also drive the lubricating oil pump or the fuel injection pump. The camshaft is timed by the crankshaft through a timing gear or camshaft gear that meshes with a gear on the front end of the crankshaft. This not only drives the camshaft, but also ensures that the valve of the diesel generator set can be in the exact position with the crankshaft and the piston.

6. Cam tappet
The cam tappets (sometimes called tappet sleeves) are installed in bore holes in the cylinder block and rest on the lobes of the cam. The long rod or hollow tube embedded in the cam tappet is called the push rod, which operates the valve.

7. Cylinder head and valve
The main function of the cylinder head is to provide a cover for the cylinder. In addition, the cylinder head has intake and exhaust ports that allow air to enter the cylinder and exhaust to exit. These ports are opened and closed by actuated valves housed in valve guides on the cylinder head.

8. Rocker arm and pushrod
The rocker arm is mounted on a mandrel, one end of the rocker arm is on the valve, and the other end is on the push rod. The movement of the putter causes the shaking
The arm swings on the mandrel, hence the name of the seeding arm. The push rod is a solid or hollow rod, which is installed in the cam tappet to transmit the action of the cam on the camshaft.

9. Oil pan
The oil pan is a basin-shaped cover that is screwed to the bottom of the cylinder block as a reservoir for diesel engine lubricating oil.

10. Lubricating oil pump
The lubricating oil pump is usually a positive displacement gear pump (a pump that outputs a fixed amount of lubricating oil per revolution). It supplies pressurized lubricating oil to the diesel engine.

11. Water pump
The water pump is a variable volume centrifugal pump (a pump that does not output quantitative water per revolution). It makes the cooling water flow through the cylinder block and the water tank. This pump is usually installed in front of the diesel engine cylinder block, dragged by the V-belt on the crankshaft, and leads to the cooling system with a rubber pipe.

12. Water tank radiator
A water tank radiator is a device that allows water to flow through and is cooled by radiation heat dissipation.

13. Lube oil cooler
The lubricating oil cooler is a device used to cool the lubricating oil when the diesel engine is running. The structure of the cooler will allow the cooling water and diesel oil to flow simultaneously without mixing.

14. Flywheel housing
The oil flywheel shell is a circular shell connected to the back of the engine with screws. The flywheel is installed in the flywheel shell as a support for the diesel engine and the transmission.

15. Flywheel
The flywheel is a heavy metal disc screwed to the rear of the crankshaft. The flywheel is equipped with a starting ring gear and the clutch of the transmission. The pulsed power of the diesel engine is absorbed and stored in a heavy metal disc mounted on the rear end of the crankshaft.

16. Torsional vibration damper
The main function of the shock absorber is to attenuate the torsional vibration generated by the diesel engine during operation. The shock absorber is installed in front of the crankshaft.

17. Intake pipe
It is connected to the cylinder head or the intake port with screws. The intake pipe is the channel for fresh air to flow from the air filter to the diesel engine. The exhaust pipe is connected to the exhaust port of the diesel engine, collects the exhaust gas and guides the exhaust gas to the muffler.

19. Fuel system
According to the load and speed of the diesel engine, the fuel system sprays the exact amount of fuel into the cylinder of the diesel engine at the exact moment.

20. Starter
The starter is a battery-driven electric motor that starts the diesel engine.

21. Alternator
The alternator is used to charge the battery and power vehicle lighting and other accessories.

22. Supercharger
A supercharger is an exhaust-driven air pump that supplies pressurized air to the diesel engine. This increase in pressure, called boost, increases the efficiency of the diesel engine.
