Introduction to the working principle and cleaning method of the diesel generator intercooler

June 01, 2022
As an important part of the supercharged engine, the intercooler is mostly installed in front of the radiator of the water tank. The appearance and structure also have a lot in common with the water tank. The "water-cooled intercooler" is generally used in the supercharged diesel generator set. , which is composed of a shell and an inner core, its function is to make the air passing through the supercharger enter the cooling process first, and maintain the normal temperature and pressure of the supercharged air entering the cylinder for combustion.

The working principle of diesel generator intercooler
The intercooler of the diesel generator is used to cool the charge air and reduce the temperature of the supercharged intake air. The temperature drop of the supercharged air in the diesel generator intercooler is generally 25~60℃. On the one hand, the charge density can be increased, and on the other hand, the cylinder temperature at the end of the intake and the average temperature over the entire cycle can be reduced. The intercooler is part of the intake manifold of the generator set, and the inner core is made of tubes in which the engine coolant circulates. The air is cooled by passing through the core before entering the generator set combustion chamber. In this way, due to the application of the intercooler, the intake air temperature (cooling) of the diesel generator is better controlled, thereby improving the combustion condition of the diesel generator.

The internal pipes of the intercooler are often attached with dirt such as sludge and colloid, which not only narrows the air flow channel, but also weakens the cooling and heat exchange capacity, which affects the normal operation of the unit. Therefore, maintenance and cleaning are necessary.

Cleaning method: Add an aqueous solution containing 2% soda ash (temperature should be 70-80 ℃) into the intercooler, fill it up, wait for 15 minutes, and see if there is any leakage in the intercooler. If there is, it should be dismantled and inspected, welded and repaired (same as the water tank of the same repair); if there is no leakage of water, shake it back and forth, repeat several times, pour out the lotion, and then fill it with a clean aqueous solution containing 2% soda ash for washing. Until it is relatively clean, refill with clean hot water (80-90 ℃) to wash until the released water is clean.

The generator manufacturer recommends that the user should clean and inspect the inside of the intercooler every year or when the engine is overhauled and the water tank is welded and repaired.
