How are diesel engines classified?

April 20, 2022
Diesel engines can be classified according to working cycle, cooling method, air intake method, average piston speed, rotational speed, combustion method, use, layout method, fuel supply method, control method, etc. There are many performance indicators of diesel engines, but for users of diesel engines, it is necessary to The indicators to understand and master are mainly dynamic performance indicators, economic performance indicators and running performance indicators.

Diesel engines are classified as follows according to working cycle, cooling method, air intake method, average piston speed, rotational speed, combustion method, application, layout method, fuel supply method, and control method:

Working cycle: two-stroke diesel engine, four-stroke diesel engine.

Cooling method: water-cooled (liquid-cooled) diesel engine, air-cooled diesel engine.

Air intake mode: natural intake diesel engine, supercharged diesel engine and supercharged intercooled diesel engine.

Average piston speed: low-speed diesel engine (Cm<6m/s); medium-speed diesel engine (Cm=6-9m/s); high-speed diesel engine (Cm=9-13m/s)

Rotational speed: n<300r/min—low-speed machine, n=300~100Or/min—medium-speed machine; n>100Or/min—high-speed machine.

Combustion mode: direct injection diesel engine, swirl chamber diesel engine, pre-combustion chamber diesel engine

Application: Marine diesel engine, locomotive diesel engine, automobile diesel engine, construction machinery diesel engine, agricultural diesel engine, etc.

Layout: in-line diesel engine, V-shaped diesel engine, horizontally opposed diesel engine, star-shaped diesel engine, king-shaped diesel engine, etc.

Fuel supply method: mechanical fuel injection diesel engine, unit pump diesel engine, common rail diesel engine, PT pump diesel engine, distribution pump diesel engine, etc.

Control mode: mechanical speed control mode, electronic speed control mode, electronic control mode

The classification of diesel engines is introduced above, so what are their performance indicators? There are many performance indicators of diesel engines, but for users of diesel engines, the indicators that need to be understood and mastered are mainly power performance indicators, economic performance indicators and operating performance indicators. as follows:

1. Dynamic performance indicators mainly include torque, power and speed. These indicators are directly related to the use effect and operating status of the diesel engine (or equipment), and are one of the indicators that diesel engine users must master first.

2. The economic performance indicators mainly include fuel consumption, fuel consumption rate, etc. These indicators are related to the economic effect of the diesel engine (or equipment) running, that is, intuitive issues such as fuel saving.

3. Operational performance indicators mainly include cold start performance, noise, emission indicators and reliability.
