How to protect diesel generators from lightning during typhoon season?

June 01, 2022
July.8 is the season of frequent typhoons. Affected by typhoon weather, natural disasters and frequent rainstorms occur in many places. In order to ensure the safety of the people, the power supply department will control power outages in a considerable area.        July.8 is the season of frequent typhoons. Affected by typhoon weather, natural disasters and frequent rainstorms occur in many places. In order to ensure the safety of the people, the power supply department will control power outages in certain areas. Can diesel generators be used in this weather? What about power supply? Dingbo Power will answer for you.

As a portable power supply device, the diesel generator set itself has a limited power supply range, and the place of use can be easily replaced; it can be placed indoors during thunderstorms, but sometimes the diesel generator set needs to be used outdoors, and it will be damaged in bad weather. When it comes to lightning protection of equipment, what specific steps are required for lightning protection of generators?

First of all, it is necessary to determine the lightning protection mode of the generator mainly according to the size of the generator capacity, the strength of the local lightning activity and the requirements for the reliability of the power supply.

Theory and practice have proved that, as long as the generator connected to the overhead transmission line through the transformer, as long as the transformer is reliably protected, it is generally not necessary to take lightning protection measures for the generator. For important generators, in order to prevent the lightning wave on the high-voltage side of the transformer from passing through the transformer and endangering the insulation of the generator, a set of magnetic blowing arresters should be installed on the outlet of the generator.

The generator directly connected to the overhead distribution line must be protected against lightning protection. Different lightning protection measures should be taken for the insulation of the generator according to the provisions of the national standard design specifications. The arrester used to protect the high-voltage rotating electrical machine generally adopts the magnetic blowing arrester, and the arrester should be installed close to the generator. Under normal circumstances, the arrester can be installed at the outlet of the motor; if there are no more than two generators connected to each group of busbars, or the capacity of a single machine does not exceed 500kw, and the distance from the arrester does not exceed 50m, the arrester can also be installed. On each group of busbars, when the neutral point of the directly matched motor can be drawn out and not directly grounded, a magnetic blower or a common valve arrester should be installed on the neutral point.
