Which is better, air-cooled generator or water-cooled generator?

May 17, 2022
Diesel generator sets will generate a lot of heat during normal operation. Excessive heat will cause the temperature of the set to rise, which will affect the work efficiency. Therefore, a cooling system must be equipped in the set to reduce the temperature of the set. The current common generator set cooling system There are two kinds of air-cooled and water-cooled, so which is better, air-cooled generator or water-cooled generator? Before making a choice, let's take a look at the technical characteristics of these two cooling types of generator sets.

Air-cooled generator
1. The engine must be air-cooled by the matching radiator.
2. The radiator must be installed on a specially designed and approved bracket.
3. The radiator must be equipped with a flanged joint of the ventilation duct, so that the ventilation duct can be attached to the radiator. A section of air duct with a flexible connector shall be installed between the radiator and the metal shutter. The pipes shall be made of galvanized sheet steel. All pipes must have sealed joints.
4. The fan must have sufficient capacity and take into account the additional resistance of airflow through ducts and shutters.

water-cooled generator
1. The engine must be water-cooled by a matching radiator, including a belt-driven fan, a coolant pump, a liquid-cooled exhaust pipe controlled by a thermostat, an intercooler, and a coolant filter that is corrosion-resistant and suitable for local conditions.
2. The radiator must be installed on a specially designed and approved bracket.
3. The radiator must be equipped with a flanged joint of the ventilation duct so that the ventilation duct can be attached to the radiator. A section of air duct with a flexible connector shall be installed between the radiator and the metal shutter. Piping shall be made of galvanized sheet steel. All pipes must have sealed joints.
4. The fan must have sufficient capacity and take into account the additional resistance of airflow through ducts and shutters.
5. Anti-corrosion agent must be added to the cooling system.
 6. The cooling system must be equipped with a coolant heater to keep the temperature of the coolant above 20°C to ensure that it can be easily started when needed. Antifreeze must also be added to the cooling system.
